CAHOOTS: Providing an Innovative Approach to Mobile Crisis Intervention since 1989

Every day people from all walks of life experience crises—mental health emergencies, substance-related distress, or medical concerns—that don’t require a police or ambulance response. In these moments, the right help can mean the difference between escalation or resolution.

That’s where CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets) comes in.

For over 35 years, CAHOOTS has worked alongside police in Eugene and Springfield, providing compassionate, professional crisis intervention at no cost to the person in need. While many assume CAHOOTS primarily serves the unhoused population, 40% of our calls come from private residences, businesses, and schools—helping everyday people in tough moments. Last year alone, CAHOOTS responded to over 15,000 calls, ensuring people in crisis received the care they needed from trained professionals with a proven record of excellence, while allowing other community emergency services to focus where needed.

Although CAHOOTS is no longer available in Eugene due to city budget cuts, CAHOOTS continues to provide critical services in Springfield. Currently, CAHOOTS operations in Springfield are available from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., 7 days a week. This targeted fundraising campaign will enable us to better serve our clients and the Springfield community.
